This was the first time that Rachel, Greg and I met since they are planning their wedding from D.C. and I have to say that it was such a treat to spend some time with them. They are such a lovely couple and I am so excited to be a part of their wedding which will take place at Pacific Oaks Vineyard Estate in Aptos. Here is one of my favorites from the engagement session. We got so lucky with the weather - the waves were huge and the sun was out. Beautiful!

to me....
another year. i can't believe it.
this past year was a good one....
i finished two half marathons and one full marathon.
i raised a whole bunch of money for team in training.
my brother is healthy after treatment for hodgkins lymphoma.
my business has grown. plus, i manage to have the best clients.
my kids are growing up to be such sweet people (at least i think so!).
my husband is still willing to put up with my craziness!
i have amazing friends and a wonderful family.

so, i am having a very happy birthday. i am on vacation with my family.
this is one happy girl.

once in a while i am asked if my job is repetitive. it may appear as though i am doing the same thing over and over again by meeting families for holiday portraits but i have to say that each time is different. each family is unique and although i have my favorite spots for photos, i do enjoy each photo session because each family brings something different to the table. different ages, different personalities. plus, the change of seasons, different weather and different light makes each session unique as well. i enjoy it all. i really do.

i know i have said this before but i am always so happy when a family returns for another year of photos. there are so many talented photographers around so i am flattered when a family comes back to me. here are a few photos from my photo session with the winslow kids. oh, so cute!

I have decided to participate in the Giving is Awesome Giveaway again. I know a lot of folks are having a hard time making ends meet and a family portrait is definitely not a necessity. This is an opportunity for a deserving family to have a family portrait session plus enlargements and reprints galore.

Giving is Awesome consists of over 200 photographers nationwide who are offering services and products to people who need some holiday cheer. The premise is simple: think of someone you know who deserves custom photography but can't afford it. Nominate them to win it. Sit back and bask in your own awesomeness.

So, put on your thinking caps.

Can you think of someone in your life who is struggling to stay afloat? Do you know someone who has experienced a tragedy or is experiencing some tough times? Someone who volunteers selflessly? Do you know someone who can't afford custom photography, but who would cherish it this holiday season?

I want to know who they are, and I want to give them a photo session plus prints and enlargements.

i am so excited....just booked another 2010 wedding! i wasn't able to meet the couple in person as they live out of town but they seemed very nice on the phone. plus, i will get the opportunity to photograph at a new venue.

last year, the little guy was hardly moving! now he is all smiles and running all over the place. always a pleasure to hang out with this family.

i have known jon since we were little kids and it was such an honor to photograph his family. we grew up together - elementary school, junior high and high school. plus, our moms are still the best of friends. i am so happy that he found the perfect partner. tamar and jon have two beautiful children and it was so much fun to have a photo session together. isn't it amazing how life works out? here we are all grown up with our own children! life is good.

erica and kumar had a very sweet wedding back in october. their closest friends and family came together to celebrate and it was a gorgeous day in the bay area. the setting was stunning, the food was delicious and erica and kumar have got to be two of the nicest people i have ever met. seriously, i have the nicest couples for clients!

the ladies of the chateau group decked the space out with vibrant colors and you could just tell that everyone was thrilled to be a part of the festivities. my absolute favorite part of the wedding was the toasts and this wedding did not disappoint! toasts are my opportunity to hear more about the bride and groom and i am always so intruiged by the stories! erica and kumar's friends had such lovely things to say about both of them and it is apparent that they are meant to be together. after the toasts we were treated to some singing. kumar's friends made up a hilarious song about growing up with kumar while a very talented friend of erica's sang a lovely song for the couple.

we had a fun halloween weekend although i ate too much candy!
the kids went through several costumes. sam was a fireman, superman and a skeleton. ryan wore this cute little dress from china, a tiger hat and a dog costume. they would change their outfits for each outing and it is all a matter of comfort. some kids love wearing costumes but my kids could care less about what they are wearing.
can someone please take the chocolate away from me?

my visit to new orleans was absolutely fabulous. i had a great time with dana and fortunately i was there on a weekend when she had some time to spare! here are a few highlights...

a pre-halloween parade!

the french quarter.

i thought this was an interesting perspective. a door from the french quarter next to a door from a house impacted by hurricane katrina.

we went down to the 9th ward and drove around the neighborhood. there are signs of life coming back and we saw some construction going on but there is a stillness to the air. i couldn't help but think about the people who had to leave their homes - a whole community is now spread across the country. there is a lot of open space now because many homes were swept off of their foundations and now there are tall grasses taking the place of homes.

we had our family photos taken a few weeks ago. to be honest, i have a hard time being on the other side of the camera! i suppose it is a good experience to be the photographed instead of the photographer.
i am heading out to new orleans to visit my sister this weekend. dana is a 2nd year medical student at tulane and i am so excited to see the city through her eyes. this is also a treat for myself after the marathon from last weekend.

here is a recent photo of ryan. i can't say that she is 'my baby' anymore...she insists that i call her 'a little girl'. they grow up so fast!

i did it!
i made it to the finish line after 26.2 miles around san francisco and although i am a bit sore today, i feel absolutely fantastic. the nike women's marathon was quite an event. everything was so well organized and team in training had such a huge presence that there was a sea of purple shirts all along the course.
i joined team in training a year ago and signed up to do a half marathon because my brother had just been diagnosed with hodgkin's lymphoma. a year later, he is finished with treatment and i am proud to say that i have finished both a full and a half marathon with team in training. the leukemia and lymphoma society does so much for cancer patients as well as funding grants for doctors who are searching for a cure. i am so proud to be a part of the organization and a huge thank you to my friends and family who made a donation to the cause and helped me reach (and go beyond) my fundraising goal.

sijing and pedro got married at the historic sand rock farm inn in aptos. the couple shared the day with their closest family and friends and it was a perfect venue for this sweet and lovely wedding. the ceremony took place in the redwood grove and then guests moved to the open air cellar for dinner and dancing.

i left this wedding feeling so lucky to have been a part of this day. sijing and pedro are so genuine and kind. they are so good together!
congratulations to the two of you and thank you so much for the gift from spain! i hope you had a wonderful honeymoon.

film vs. digital

are you still using film or have you switched to digital?
last week i attended my first wipa event and after an amazing talk by sean low, we met up in groups by profession. i had the honor of meeting some fantastic local photographers and we spoke about the film vs. digital debate. everyone has his/her own opinion on which medium is superior yet i feel that there are advantages to both. so, i shoot with both. unfortunately, my shoulders get hit the hardest because at each wedding i am carrying around a ton of gear.
i have to say that the immediate feedback of a digital camera is convenient yet there is something so satisfying about getting a roll of film back after it has been processed. the debate continues!

as a last hooray before kindergarten, sam and i went on a mini-vacation to yosemite. we went up with a friend and her little guy and it was absolutely fabulous. i haven't been in ages and it was so much fun to introduce sam to yosemite valley.

yesterday was the first day of school for ryan. i was torn between wanting to hold on tight to my baby and knowing that it was time to let her go in to the real world. there is no question that she is ready for school yet this is the end of an era. my little one is now in school!
while sam is slowly getting used to a new school for kindergarten, ryan didn't need more than a hug and a kiss good-bye. she just walked right in to the classroom and was ready to begin a new chapter of her life.
i know they are both in good hands and i can leave them with confidence. i wish we lived in a world where teachers salaries matched the magnitude of their responsibilities. thank you so much to the teachers. thank you to mrs. c. for being patient and understanding as my slow-to-warm child warms up to a new school. thank you to ryan's teachers for taking care of my little one as she begins her journey through pre-school.

lindsey and dan hired me to photograph their wedding before we got a chance to meet in person. dan and lindsey live in philadelphia but wanted to have their wedding in palo alto because both of their families are still in the area.
we finally got a chance to meet just a few days before their wedding and i really enjoyed spending a few hours with them and seeing how sweet they are together. after chatting about their wedding day plans, we drove to a local park and did a late engagement session.

i got to attend a very cool event this evening in the city. blog out loud was created by megan arquette (beach bungalow 8) and rebecca orlov (loving.living.small) because they want to help other people enter the world of blogging. how wonderful that all of the women who participated in the event did it to be kind and generous!
the event was held at bell jar, a fabulous boutique in the mission. the place was packed with people but it was a lovely event and i highly recommend attending if you have any interest in starting up your own blog and/or want some words of wisdom from established and respected blog writers.

we went to the monterey bay aquarium a few weeks ago to see the sea horse exhibit. if you are able to go, i highly recommend it! the sea horses are such amazing creatures and the monterey bay aquarium is wonderful.

a few weeks ago, i had the pleasure of meeting diane of dkdesigns. she is such a nice person and so very, very talented. at first glance, you may think she is a florist but she actually creates these beautiful flowers out of clay! every flower looks like the real thing but you can keep it forever!
one advantage of using clay flowers is that you don't have to be local so anyone may work with diane. in fact, she has created beautiful pieces for brides in france, hawaii and new york.
another wonderful aspect of clay flowers is that you are free to use your favorite flower regardless of whether it is in season. check out her etsy site for more examples of her work.

lair of the bear

i have such fond memories of going to the lair of the bear as a kid and i was so excited to share this experience with my kids. we spent the week in a tiny one room cabin with one outlet and one lightbulb. the dining hall is loud but the food is good. the kids were dusty all week long and a dip in the pool was equal to a shower. the week was full of good old fashioned fun with tie-dye, lanyards, disco bingo, face painting, swimming, boats on the lake, campfires, sing-alongs and s'mores. i even played in a tennis tournament even though the closest i have been to playing tennis in the past fifteen years is watching wimbeldon on tv! (lindsey, thanks for inviting me to play!)

my sister and i went to the 2nd annual renegade craft fair this weekend in san francisco and we felt like kids in a candy store! there were so many amazing artists and so much talent! plus, it was one of those beautiful days in the city where everyone was out and about.
i have been enjoying my sister's company since she has been home from medical school. she is leaving today and i am so sad. i guess this means i must plan a trip to new orleans to visit her.

i have to apologize for the lack of posts lately. we have been so busy around here. so much to do, so little time! here is a bit of an update on what has been going on in my world.
-the kid's play house is almost done and i am absolutely thrilled at how it is all working out. we decided to go pretty simple and i think it will be great for the kids to use their imaginations and creativity. i will post some pictures when it is all finished.
-last week, we spent a few days at a wonderful beach house in aptos and it was so nice to get away for a few days. we went to the beach every day and squeezed in a few hours at the santa cruz beach boardwalk when the fog rolled in. if you are interested in renting a wonderful house in aptos, let me know!
-my husband and i celebrated our 8th wedding anniversary. 8 years! i can't believe it! i still look back on our wedding day and smile. the day was magical - all of our family and friends came together to celebrate and it was so special. thank you to my husband for putting up with me! we have been through a lot of craziness in eight years - five different homes, two beautiful children, a new job and many other ups and downs that go with the territory. thank you jerry!
- my little sister is celebrating her 25th birthday today. happy birthday to my super smart, talented, creative and beautiful sister, dana!
-team in training is going well and we are up to 8 miles now. i know october will sneak up on me so quickly but i am still aiming for a full marathon. every time i feel like it is too much, i just think of what my brother has been through with cancer treatment and i know that my problems are trivial.
i wish you a happy fourth of july weekend. we are hosting the annual block party at our house and i am looking forward to some yummy bbq, lemonade, fresh fruit and spending time with friends. what else could a girl want?

i was so excited when christine contacted me to photograph her boys. christine and i went to high school together and we have seen each other a few times over the years but it was so nice to spend some time with her family. her boys are so cute! the photo session was supposed to be a father's day surprise but it didn't quite work out as planned. dad called in sick so christine had to spill the beans - it worked out nicely since we got the whole family in a few photos!

i have a confession. i am a book addict. children's books are the worst. there is something about a touching story and beautiful illustrations that i can't resist.
a few weeks back, i came across this sweet book about a boy who decides to start a garden along an abandoned railroad track. over time the garden grows and expands along the tracks and the whole city transforms into something beautiful.
quite coincidently, this story pops up about an abandoned railroad line in manhattan that has been turned into a public park. isn't that beautiful? you can check out the details at the website dedicated to the park : the high line. just think of the possibilities!

on monday, i went to sam's school to talk about my 'job' for career day. i had so much fun explaining a bit about photography to thirty pre-school children. i brought in a bunch of old rolls of film and let them unravel the rolls which was probably the highlight for most of them! i bet many of the kids have never seen a roll of film!
by coincidence, i came across this venn diagram and thought about how lucky i am to have found a career that i love. as i tell my clients, i truly enjoy photography and it genuinely feels like a hobby. i have found my 'hooray'!

happy friday everyone!
i just got the film negatives back from lisa and michael's wedding. this is always a moment of nervous excitement as there is no 'immediate feedback' part of shooting with film. i am so pleased by the images and here is one that caught my eye on the first round. the church was quite dark so hooray for high speed film and a steady hand!

have a wonderful weekend! i hope you are able to relax a bit. i am starting off the team in training season on saturday. yes, i signed up again although this time i am going to be a mentor and i am doing a full (*gulp*) marathon. i am absolutely thrilled that my brother will be on the team as an honoree. he is doing so well and i am so happy that he will be by my side.
another exciting weekend plan is a visit to the alameda flea market with my super talented/decorator extraordinaire friend, paula. i am so excited!

fascinating movie

i just finished watching the most fascinating movie : surfwise. the new york times describes the documentary as 'a wonderfully engaging look at love and family and the relentless pursuit of happiness, personal meaning and perfect waves'.
doc paskowitz and his wife had nine children and they lived out of a twenty-four foot trailer and travelled around to various beach towns during the 60's and 70's. the movie tells the story of the family and how each member of the family was impacted by the unconventional lifestyle. the movie is both uplifting and sad. such an amazing story! add it to your netflix list today!

evan and kristin's wedding was so absolutely gorgeous. the olowalu plantation house is such a special spot. if you are considering a destination wedding on maui, no need to shop around because this is the place! evan and i have known each other since college (just a few years ago!) so it was really special to be present for his wedding. evan and kristin are a perfect match and i couldn't be happier for the two of them.
our trip to maui was amazing. we went to the best restaurants on the island (hali' imaili general store, sansei, david paul's) and enjoyed really incredible food. we also made the trip to the upcountry to visit a lavender farm, ate lunch at the kula lodge and visited the art gallery of my favorite maui artist, curtis wilson cost. read books by the pool, visited the beach, walked around lahaina.....so relaxing!

we had such a lovely holiday weekend on maui. we went to a few amazing restaurants, visited some fun tourist spots, hung out on the beach...a whole lot of rest and relaxation! to top it all off, evan and kritin's wedding was beyond beautiful!

this weekend is going to be beautiful around northern california. i am so excited for the warm weather...summer is right around the corner. hooray! summer is my absolute favorite season.
we have been thinking about putting a small playhouse in the backyard for the kids. i have such fond memories of playing in the playhouse that my grandfather built. unfortunately, the old playhouse has been torn down. while searching online for tips for building a playhouse, i have found some amazing examples of playhouse extravagance. how about $38,000? craziness! we are definitely working with a much smaller budget!

i really, really, really want to go to one of the outstanding in the field dinners. i love the idea of enjoying fresh food while sitting at a long table out in the middle of a field. the community table sounds like so much fun! unfortunately, all of the upcoming spring and summer dates are sold out.

i apologize for the lack of posts lately. so much to do, so little time. this photo by susie bell is a perfect image for the weekend. it is raining and chilly outside and i would love to curl up with my latest book. thank you to my sister for the recommendation. this book is amazing! rumor has it that warner brothers is working on a screen adaptation of the book with johnny depp playing the main character. sounds good to me!
